The Local Initiator

Won't drink it himself — but he needs to watch you try, and the phone's already up.

Drinks of choice

Regional cult bottles nobody orders twice — wormwood liqueurs, fernet, the bitter local legend that comes with a story and a dare. Drinkability is a bug, not a feature. The worse your face, the better the pour did its job.

  • Buys the round, skips the shot
  • Phone up before you swallow
  • Weaponized hometown pride
  • Collects faces, not tasting notes
  • It's affection. Technically.

The dossier

The Local Initiator does not have a favorite drink. He has a favorite reaction. Somewhere on the back bar there’s a bottle from his particular corner of the world — bitter, punishing, beloved almost entirely as a dare — and he keeps it close not to drink but to administer. He is from here. And “here,” he’ll have you know, has a taste.

He orders the round for the out-of-towners himself, waving off your protests with the calm of a man who has done this many times. The bartender slides the shots down the bar like a card-dealer in a Western. Then he sits back, hands folded, and waits for the good part — which is not the drink. It is never the drink.

The tell: he isn’t watching the glass. He’s watching your face, phone already up and framed, because the whole transaction was always about the nine seconds where your soul briefly files for relocation. He has a folder. You’re in it now.

Here’s the affectionate part, and it’s realer than it looks: the initiation is an act of welcome. For the length of one terrible swallow, he’s making you a local — folding you into a joke his whole city is in on. When your face collapses and the bar laughs, that laughter is for you, not at you. And he’ll buy the next round without a word. A real one, this time.

“Welcome. You’re one of us for the next nine seconds. Try to enjoy it.”

He needed the photo first. He always needs the photo first. Let him have it — it’s the closest thing to a hug he knows how to give a stranger.

For Vince, who doesn't drink it — he buys it to watch your soul briefly leave your body.

Could this be you?

Don't take it personally. Take the quiz.

Find out which drinker you really are — or name a bottle and let the Pour Profiler read whoever's holding it. Both are free; neither is gentle.
