The Safe Bettor
Orders the fanciest-sounding, lowest-proof pour and calls it strategy.
Drinks of choice
The most expensive-sounding, lowest-proof pour on the menu — a gentle, name-brand bourbon that photographs as connoisseurship but drinks like a firm handshake. The whiskey was never the point. Looking like he knows whiskey was the point.
- Never orders first
- Three tasting words, rotated
- One pour, all night
- Knows his exact limit
- Connoisseurship, zero risk

The dossier
The Safe Bettor has run the numbers on every drink order before the waiter reaches the table. He isn’t afraid of much — except being the one who overdid it at the work dinner, and being handed something strong enough to prove he can’t hold it. So he engineers his way around both. He orders the pour with the most impressive name and the least actual proof, holds it up to the light, and performs the entire body language of a man wrestling something complex and powerful.
He never orders first — ordering first is for amateurs. He waits, reads the table, and picks the option that looks like sophistication and tastes like water. He has three tasting words and he rotates them carefully: approachable, balanced, and, if he’s feeling bold, easy-drinking. He’ll nurse the one glass for two hours and never, ever order a second. The second is where the danger lives.
The tell: he holds the glass up to the light and frowns with thought — at a pour he could drink like a juice box. Ask him what he’s tasting and you’ll get a word, not a flavor.
And here’s the affectionate part, because there’s always one: he’s not a coward. He knows his own limits with a precision most drinkers never bother to learn, and he’s quietly built a way to take part in a ritual that intimidates him without ever embarrassing himself or anyone else. That isn’t weakness. That’s project management.
“I’ll do the one that sounds expensive. Neat.”
He’s playing a different game than the rest of the table — and very quietly, he’s winning it.

For Doug, the safe bettor — the fanciest-sounding pour that still tastes like water.
Could this be you?
Don't take it personally. Take the quiz.
Find out which drinker you really are — or name a bottle and let the Pour Profiler read whoever's holding it. Both are free; neither is gentle.
