The Value Evangelist
Right about taste-per-dollar, and will not stop being right at you.
Drinks of choice
The bottle the professionals buy with their own money — the one that embarrasses things at three times the price. Unpretentious, additive-free, peer-reviewed by people who actually pour for a living. Discernment as a way to beat the system on a budget.
- One bottle, chosen hard
- Bartenders drink this
- Cost-per-pour, tracked
- Respects the spirit, roasts the price
- The sermon comes free

The dossier
The Value Evangelist has discovered that taste-per-dollar is a subject you can be right about, publicly, on a grad-student stipend — and he has never let go. His bar is one bottle on a shelf otherwise occupied by dead Russians. His hosting is a controlled ritual, the juice squeezed that hour, the good cheap spirit doing the good cheap work.
And at some point in the evening — the lime still on his hands — comes the sermon: “You know what bartenders actually drink, right?” He does not wait for an answer.
The tell: he isn’t wrong, he’s armed. He knows the blind-tasting results, what the celebrity brands spend on billboards versus barrels, and the exact phrase to make you feel you’d been overpaying your whole life. He accepts a gifted celebrity bottle with the warmth of a priest receiving a casserole from a heretic — then makes the drinks with his own anyway.
The affectionate part: the sermon is annoying, and it’s also a gift. Nobody leaves his place poorer, and nobody leaves thirsty. On no money, he produces the thing all the money in the world keeps failing to buy — a genuinely great night.
“This? Twenty-eight dollars. Bartenders drink this.”
Preach it, professor. The finest things in life are peer-reviewed, and some of them cost twenty-eight dollars.
