The Vessel Collector
Never finished a bottle — but the empties have a picture light.
Drinks of choice
Whatever comes in the most beautiful container — the hand-painted ceramic, the bell that rings, the bottle engineered to survive being empty. The liquid is an interior-design purchase that happens to be drinkable, and it usually stays ninety percent full forever.
- Buys the decanter, not the spirit
- Four empties, arranged by height
- Negative space
- Closing-gift economy
- Eucalyptus in one

The dossier
The Vessel Collector does not, strictly speaking, drink. She acquires vessels. The bottles arrive as closing gifts and leave as décor, and somewhere in between roughly ninety percent of the actual spirit enters hospice — a splash for a colleague, a margarita experiment she regretted, an inch finished by a house sitter she never noticed.
The empties live on the credenza, arranged left to right by height like a small ceramic choir, and they are lit — there is a dedicated picture light. Two hold eucalyptus. One holds nothing, which she’ll tell you is intentional: “negative space.”
The tell: ask about them and she says “oh, those,” in the tone of a woman who has rehearsed “oh, those.” The entire room is engineered so that you ask.
The affectionate part: watch her on an actual closing day, and the theater turns out to be in honor of something real — somebody’s biggest day, marked with the fanciest object she knows how to deploy. She remembers their kids’ names. She fought the appraiser for them like a wolverine in a blazer.
“Oh, those? They’re just… they photograph beautifully, don’t they.”
Most people’s trophies commemorate what they won. Hers commemorate what she helped somebody else win. Keep the empty on the credenza, light and all.
